Research of the Alexander Gate at Daugavpils Fortress

PROJECT BRIEF

The Alexander Gate is situated at the end of the Imperial Street, facing the Nicholas Gate. Constructed during the 1820s, the Alexander Gate derives its name from the children of Paul I. It is characterized by its brickwork, an arched passageway, and the use of hewn granite blocks at the base of its walls.

PROJECT DETAILS

The restoration project of the Alexander Gate at Daugavpils Fortress initiated with an architectural and artistic inquiry, offering insight into the gate’s original form and purpose and highlighting the modifications it underwent over the centuries. The architectural and artistic study of the Alexander Gate serves as the foundation for the development of subsequent construction projects.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The restoration of the Alexander Gate at Daugavpils Fortress represents an essential endeavor in preserving the architectural heritage of the region. The architectural and artistic inquiry laid the groundwork for future endeavors aimed at maintaining and restoring the historical significance of this iconic structure. Through these endeavors, we reinforce our commitment to safeguarding Latvia’s rich cultural and architectural legacy for generations to come.
